The main reason for referral is to check the health of a pregnancy following an episode of pain or bleeding. Bleeding is a common symptom in early pregnancy. This is when the developing embryo implants itself in the wall of your womb. This type of bleeding often happens around the time your period would have been due.
Pregnancy can cause changes to the cervix, and this may sometimes cause bleeding — after sex, for example. However, many women who bleed at this stage of pregnancy go on to have normal and successful pregnancies. You should let your midwife or GP know if you experience bleeding and they will advise you whether you require to be seen by the EPAS. A small number of women may be asked to self refer to EPAS at the direction of their healthcare professional based on increased risk factors and or previous history.
If this relates to you, you will be given the contact details.

Tuesday September 28th started as a normal day but for me but there was an added excitement – I was almost 22 weeks pregnant and it was the day of my anomaly scan with my consultant in the hospital. Our scan appointment was for 3.

I am currently 6 weeks pregnant with my second baby. I went for an early scan last Thursday to to rule out an ectopic pregnancy as had been having a few pains. Its not ectopic but the sonographer couldnt find a heartbeat. Made it very clear to me that there needs to be one this Thursday as I will be 7 weeks and 2 days by then. I am broken hearted at what is ahead of me. Has anybody any advice? Id really appreciate it as my husband isnt very supportive x. I had a scan when I was 7 weeks and 2 days and baby only measured 5ws6days, HB was low at 86bpm, had to go back the following week to check growth, the lady doing scan was saying my dates etc could be wrong but if I know my dates, if I was wrong I would have found out I was pregnant at 3 weeks.
Sarah Anne, I dont have any advice for you but sometimes heartbeats arent detected until closer to 7 weeks.

A dating scan is an ultrasound examination which is performed in order to establish the gestational age of the pregnancy. Most dating scans are done with a trans-abdominal transducer and a fullish bladder. If the pregnancy is very early the gestation sac and fetus will not be big enough to see, so the transvaginal approach will give better pictures. Dating scans are usually recommended if there is doubt about the validity of the last menstrual period.
By 6 to 7 weeks gestation the fetus is clearly seen on trans-vaginal ultrasound and the heart beat can be seen at this early stage 90 to beats per minute under 6 to 7 weeks, then to beats per minute as the baby matures.
I knew what I was supposed to see because I had been here before. A bulbous little twitchy shape in the gloom. And in it, a dot, flickering as if to send me a message in Morse code. That dot was his heartbeat. This had been a remarkably relaxed pregnancy. No cramps. No exhaustion. No nausea. No furious hunger. I was hoping he was right. Her supervisor was curt and to the point.
No heartbeat. She knew damn well what came next — devastation. But she was palming the responsibility off to my GP.

She was the one who had no heartbeat at eight weeks, but who made mine beat strongly again six months later. There was one moment where pregnancy scans no longer became exciting for me. I was 12 weeks and six days pregnant for the third time. I was at the radiology place for my nuchal translucency scan. I happily bounced up onto the bed, looking forward to being able to empty my bladder but even more so, dying to find out if the radiologist would hazard a guess at whether we would be having a third boy, or our first girl.

Back to Miscarriage. If you see your GP or midwife because of vaginal bleeding or other symptoms of miscarriage, you may be referred to an early pregnancy unit at a hospital for tests. If you’re more than 18 weeks pregnant, you’ll usually be referred to the maternity unit at the hospital. If you’re less than 6 weeks pregnant, you may not be referred for tests straight away. This is because it’s very hard to confirm a miscarriage this early on.
The hospital can carry out tests to confirm whether you’re having a miscarriage. The tests can also confirm whether there’s still some pregnancy tissue left in your womb an incomplete or delayed miscarriage or if all the pregnancy tissue has been passed out of your womb a complete miscarriage. In most cases, this is usually carried out using a small probe inserted into the vagina transvaginal ultrasound. This can feel a little uncomfortable but is not painful.
Neither type of scan is dangerous to the baby and they do not increase your risk of miscarriage.
