Who is looking for love online?
The online dating market in the U.S. has seen constant growth over the past few years. In 2022, there were 57.44 million online dating service users in the United States. Additionally, as of July 2022, 30 percent of adults in the U.S. had used online dating services at some point. U.S. Men were more likely than women to have ever used online dating services and lesbian, gay, or bisexual individuals were more active than straight individuals on dating platforms.
From serious relationships to hook-ups, dating apps provide ways for singles to find connections in whichever way they fancy. Grindr, a free to use platform aimed at LGBTQI+ users, is known of by 58 percent of online daters in the United States, and one in ten users reported being loyal to the platform. Ashley Madison, boasting the idea that flirting and meet ups are not just for singles, had an awareness of 44 percent amongst U.S. users. In 2015, Ashley Madison experienced a data breach, in which hackers threatened to expose users’ personal data unless the website was taken offline. As of August 2022, one in ten online daters were using the service.
Can algorithms help find the one?
Once considered quite unusual, meeting someone special online is now very much a societal norm. As of July 2022, one in five partnered adults in the United States aged between 18 and 29 years stated they had met their current spouse or partner via an online dating platform. People in the U.S. are willing to put their faith into technology when it comes to finding a match, as 21 percent of U.S. adults said that computer programs or algorithms used by dating sites and apps could determine whether two people will fall in love.
Whilst online dating creates chances for singles to meet their perfect matches, the process is not completely safe from opportunists. As of July 2022, half of surveyed U.S. adults thought they had encountered scammers on an online dating site. Over one in ten U.S. adults said they had definitely interacted with a catfish online and eight percent of men were sure they had sent money to a catfish.
